Cold Enough to Think

Computation is invisible, so the shelf prints it: every cabinet throws a fan of heat that sweeps the frost clear, and the swept ground is the only picture of the thought.

Across the middle, ten identical dark computing cabinets stand shoulder to shoulder on a low shelf, each with a stack of pale module slots and one bright vertical strip of status light, fed from a heavy bus duct running along their feet. Above them a horizontal manifold carries risers up to a row of canted radiator panels whose faces read almost white against a deeper grey sky. At the left, a low ridge set with small collector masts stands in silhouette against a bright dome of daylight lying just beyond the horizon, and three braced lattice towers walk a pair of sagging conductors in from that light to a switch house at the end of the shelf. In front, keystoned fans of pale ground open below each cabinet, growing wider bay by bay from left to right, edged with a darker rim of re-deposited frost and crossed by the long shadows of the shelf posts and of a few boulders lying in the thrown light.

A night on Mercury lasts about 88 Earth days and the unlit surface falls to roughly 100 K, and since a radiator sheds heat faster into a colder sky, the cold is the real reason to put a thinking machine out here.
