Nine Kilns Under Mars

Nine kilns hold nine hours of the same batch, and the moon comes out of them as fuel.

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. In the centre stand three tall vertical retorts, each a domed cylinder narrowing to a discharge cone and a small draw off chute. Horizontal rules cut each retort into three stacked hearths, giving nine chambers in all, and every chamber holds a different depth of glowing charge, from a nearly full white hot bed to a low dull one, so the bank reads as one batch caught at nine different hours. A three by three arrangement of column and row rules is set around the vessels like a table, and those rules run on past the machinery to the edges of the plate. Across the top a single bright horizontal line runs the width of the plant as a power bus, fed from the left by a mast; three vertical risers drop from it and end in small hard points of light where they tap the left flank of each hearth. Above the retorts a wide horizontal duct is the vapour collection header, and it turns down the right hand side to a large pale sphere with a smaller sphere below it, both holding cryogen. From the spheres a live arm reaches out to a tanker standing on a pad at the bottom right, drawn as a cone on a squat body inside a service gantry. At the left a stepped bench cut descends toward the viewer with a cutting machine on its floor throwing a hard white light, a diagonal ducted bridge carries the cut rock up to a tall lift shaft, and four tilted collector panels stand on the ridge above. Dust rises from the working face and drifts across the plate, vapour leaves the head of the bank, and a thin plume stands off a relief stack at the top right. No text, no lettering, no insignia. An artistic imagining, rendered procedurally, of a regolith cracking plant on Phobos: nine kilns in a three by three bank, each holding the same batch at a different hour, baking water out of the moon's own rock while a collector field on the ridge feeds one bus overhead and the vapour driven off goes to a condenser, into cryogenic storage, and out along a filling arm to a waiting tanker. Phobos is genuinely low in density and dark in spectrum, which is why it has been studied for decades as a possible propellant depot, and the real story is the power bill: hydrated rock gives up its bound water only when baked to several hundred degrees, and splitting that water then costs on the order of 50 kilowatt hours of electricity per kilogram of hydrogen; whether Phobos holds usable water at all is unresolved, and this plant is speculation.
