Where the Beam Bends

Light will not follow a circle, so the machine has to be the bend in the line of power.

A photogram style print on laid pale-wheat stock, drawn only in line: every straight mark is a ray running out from one point, and every curve is an arc struck about that same point or about Saturn, whose centre lies far below the bottom of the frame. Saturn's rings fill the whole field as hundreds of concentric arcs in pale gold, deep amber and graphite, banded light and dark, and crossing the picture is a clear empty lane held between two heavy black walls: the gap. Standing in that lane, a little left of centre, is the repeater. A deep dish of ruled arcs and radial ribs opens back along the line the beam arrives on; at the machine's centre is a small blank core burnt to the pale-wheat stock tone where the beam is caught and turned; a lopsided dark keel of dense ribs hangs under it on the Saturn side; a comb of emitter tines fans out on the other; a trussed mast leans up out of the ring plane and ends in a small open platform; and a short spiral of wire is opened out behind the dish. The beam itself enters from beyond the left edge as a broad amber band with a white over exposed line burning down its middle, passes through the machine, and leaves to the right at a visibly different angle, ruled across with curved wavefronts, into a small second station drawn at the right edge of the frame. Every particle in the rings prints its own short shadow as a tick pointing away from the machine. On the Saturn side a wedge of ring material has reversed tone into a dark hatched lune edged by bare white contour lines; on the opposite side the print has burnt clean out to pale-wheat printed light, so the mast stands against nothing. An artistic imagining, not existing hardware: a power repeater stationed in the Cassini Division, catching a beam that has run the ring plane and throwing it on around the curve, drawn as a contact print made by the beam itself. The division is a real lane about 4,700 kilometres wide between Saturn's A and B rings, swept largely by a 2:1 resonance with Mimas, and because light will not bend to follow it, the straight hop drawn here runs some 33,300 kilometres and sags about 1,160 kilometres toward the planet, which is why a chain like this needs a machine standing at every bend.
