The Proving Yard

One unit, over and over: the yard builds the same pile again and again, and proves each one by making it work before it is allowed to leave.

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A pale blue-grey square printed entirely in halftone dots, the screen radiating from one point below the frame so the rows of dots curve and every machine leans on its own local vertical. The ground is the close, visibly curved surface of a small moon, its limb crossing the upper third. A long dark gantry arc spans the yard carrying two trolleys; one lowers a squat cylindrical core drum on a cable toward the stepped base waiting to take it. Along one arc below the gantry stand three copies of the same machine at different stages of assembly: a wide stepped shield block on a cradle, the same block with its core drum seated on top, and a third with a conversion skid and crated radiator panels at its flank, each with a slim lattice service tower beside it. Further right a finished unit stands cold with two grey radiator panels spread. In the near right foreground the same unit again, larger, stands on a test stand: its core band burns bright blue inside a soft blue halo, its two unequal radiator wings are ruled in bright blue dots that thin from root to tip, and an instrument mast rises above it. A heavy blue cable leaves its skid, sweeps along the apron across the bottom of the plate and ends in a rack of blue lit resistor tubes at the left. Two small suited figures stand on the apron for scale and an empty flat transporter runs back up the rails, which fan out from the bottom edge to every bay. High at the upper left a small tug climbs away with a finished unit slung beneath it.
An artistic imagining, not existing hardware: a yard on Deimos where the same small fission power unit is built again and again along one arc of bays, and where each one is proved at full power on a test stand, radiators lit, before a tug carries it off to whatever it will run. Reactors really are exercised on the ground before they fly, their output dumped into a resistive load bank: the KRUSTY test of 2018 took a real fission core and its Stirling converters through a full mission profile exactly that way.
