The Hour of the Loaves

The vats stand in their own enormous shadows and hand the day's bread out to the front of the frame.

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A dimensional, fully rendered view down the open deck of a protein works in orbit, lit by one low sun raking across it at a shallow angle, so that everything in the picture throws a shadow more than four times its own height. The palette is terracotta, ochre, burnt sienna and bone, against a deep blue black sky with sparse stars, and the only cool colour is the photovoltaic array. In the immediate foreground, standing in the sun, a metal packing table carries seven pale oval loaves in two rows, with a few cut slices propped on edge beside them. Behind it a conveyor of dark grating carries a line of loaves away to the left, past an upright cooling trolley of eight shelves loaded with more loaves, to a low press house with a wide funnel shaped extruder hopper on its roof. Along the right hand side of the deck stands a row of five sealed fermenter vats: tall cylinders with domed tops and conical bottoms on short legs, each with a dark cooling jacket round its waist, a ladder up its flank, narrow sight glasses glowing faintly with pale broth, a gooseneck vapour pipe and a junction box fed by conduit. Behind the vats runs a coursed masonry arcade of arched bays whose openings give straight onto black space, with a service gantry, handrails and a solid stair down to the deck. A second arcade closes the plaza in the distance, its round headed arches showing the dark sky through them. Along the left edge a third arcade, carried between square capped freight pylons, throws long bars of shadow across the terracotta deck plates. High above the works, canted towards the sun on a trussed mast, is a large deep blue photovoltaic wing ruled by raised battens into a grid of cells, with a smaller second bay of the same wing inboard of it and pale bracing struts running back from it towards the works.

Gas fermentation of single cell protein is real: hydrogen oxidising bacteria will grow edible protein biomass from carbon dioxide, hydrogen split out of water, and mineral salts, which is what makes protein a direct product of electricity rather than of land.
