Where the Ink Stops

The brightest thing in the universe is the part of the page the press left bare.

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A square engraved collage sheet in four brown inks on warm bone stock, built as an irregular lattice of pasted plates, each one ruled at its own angle and pitch. Every value in the picture is made of drawn lines: there is no flat fill, no gradient and no photographic tone. Just left of centre a small disc of bare stock burns inside a dense cross ruled torus, and two narrow beams of bare stock leave it along a tilted axis, one running clear off the top of the sheet and one falling down to the left. Nothing is printed inside the star or its beams. On the right a vast segmented pickup ring, nine coil blocks with gear teeth on its outer edge and short vanes on its inner face, stands on two unequal braced legs and is cropped by the right edge of the frame; a boom reaches off its inner face toward the star and a family of heavy curved field lines runs from the star into the ring. A heavy double cable leaves the ring, drops diagonally to a long chamfered plinth on rows of buttresses, and feeds risers into four standing crucibles, no two of them alike, one with gear teeth bolted along its rim flange and one with corrugated fins clamped to its side. Above them a hopper house of three tapered bins feeds curved chutes down to a stepped distribution duct with four valve bodies of graded size, and short pipes drop from the duct into each vessel. The falling beam passes between two hatched throat walls into the open mouth of the fourth vessel, and a launder carries the result down to the right where five blocks sit on a rail, the nearest cross ruled almost black and each one lighter than the last. Pasted into the emptier plates are a cropped gear rim, a valve body and an exploded four layer catalogue view of one coil segment with leader lines.
A fully speculative artistic imagining: nothing like this forge exists, is planned or is within reach of any known engineering. Parked at the pole of a neutron star, a segmented ring takes power off the field and spends it firing four crucibles, while the star's own polar jet falls between two throat walls into an open vessel and leaves again as ingots cooling along the rail.
