Nowhere Cooler

On a world hotter than your waste heat, cooling is a climb: the machine spends power raising its heat stage by stage until it is hot enough to give away.

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A square plate in one green, painted as modelled tubes on a pale sage sky and a pale ash plain. A single machine crosses the whole picture on a rising diagonal from the lower left corner to the upper right. At the low end, half cut by the frame, stands a dark bottle green drum, the coldest thing in the picture, banded with two collars and tapped by a pair of short pipes with disc feet. A dark line leaves it and enters a cascade of four cylinders laid along the climb, each one wider than the one before it and each a step paler, ringed at both ends and belted with three thin collars. Two upright cans stand out of the cascade on the perpendicular axis, each capped with a small saturated green disc. A heavy conduit runs down and to the right from the cascade to a second drum standing clear on the plain, ringed four times and capped with its own bright green disc. A slim dark return pipe runs the full length of the machine below it and drops back into the cold drum, tied up to the cascade by three short risers, and two splayed tubular struts with round feet hold the whole climb off the ground. A short ladder of rails and rungs is fixed to the third stage. Past the last stage the machine narrows through a pale neck into a threaded stack of seven near white elliptical plates of unequal span, hot enough to glow, which runs off the top right corner and closes on a green end cap. A broad pale plume leans up and to the left across the sky above the plates. Small boulders and long low swells lie on the plain, and far off at the left, small and hazed almost into the air, a second machine of the same design stands on the horizon.
An artistic imagining, not existing hardware: a heat shed on the surface of Venus, where the ground is already hotter than most machines' waste heat and cooling is therefore uphill work, drawn as one long tubular climb from a dark cold box at the bottom left to a stack of white hot plates at the top right. The Venusian surface sits near 465 C under about 92 bar of carbon dioxide and heat only flows from hot to cold, so the four widening stages are a pump: power spent lifting heat above ambient until the planet will finally take it.
