Slab In, Truss Out

The ring is a machine tool wrapped round a planet: slabs go in at one end of the deck and a lattice bigger than the girder that made it grows out of the other, one hot cell at a time.

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A dark halftone poster of a fabrication ring in orbit around Mars, printed entirely in dots of one bone ink and one oxide red ink on black. Mars fills most of the frame as a deep brick red sphere, lit from a small sun cropped in the top right corner and falling away to blackness at the lower left. A long lattice girder curves across the lower third of the picture and passes in front of the planet, and a second slender arc of the same ring reappears from behind the planet at the upper right, which is what shows the deck to be a closed ring rather than a straight beam. Along the deck, left to right: stacks of delivered metal slabs, a low hauler carrying one slab, an open hearth holding a wide pool of glowing orange melt, a taller press with a vertical slit of the same glow and a billet leaving it on rollers, a crane rail carrying a slanted beam whose freshly cut end is still bright, a switch house with three insulators, and four large photovoltaic wings tilted towards the sun, with one thin bright bus line running the length of the deck from the wings back to the work. Three small suited figures stand on the deck, faceless and roughly a hundredth of the height of what is being built. Rising from the deck on three lattice cradle masts is the structure under construction: a rectangular truss raft eight cells wide and seven deep, its lower left cells already closed with grey plates, its frame erected two cells ahead of the plating so that the whole right side ends in a staircase of open bays, and six welding heads throwing short violent orange arcs along the diagonal build front. A small carrier stands off below the deck with the next bundle of slabs. All tone is halftone dots; the only unbroken marks are the drawn contour lines.
An artistic imagining, not existing hardware: a fabrication ring in Mars orbit turning delivered slab feedstock into a truss raft far larger than the girder that is building it, with the photovoltaic wings, the deck bus and the welding heads drawn as one unbroken path from sunlight to placed steel. Electron beam freeform fabrication is a real additive process in which an electron beam melts metal feedstock in vacuum to build a structural part up layer by layer, which is the physical reason an orbital yard would look like a line of open hearths and arcs rather than a furnace with a chimney.
