The Cold Is the Customer

The coldest floor in the solar system is not this plant's hazard, it is its customer - and the plant pays it in heat for the right to stand there and be the only sun the floor has ever had.

Standing on the floor below is a power station built only from spheres, cylinders and cones: a squat containment drum capped by a hemisphere at the left, a low turbine hall behind it, and two flared radiator towers of different sizes, the taller one rising past the rim into the sky and the smaller one set back to the right. In the gap between the containment and the big tower's foot a transfer duct glows warm cream-gold; it is the only light in the bowl, and it sits at ground level inside the machinery. Everything else is lit by it and cools to deep cyan as it goes away. Long foundation drums give each mass a footing on the ice. A pipe trunk walks out to the lower right and enters the ice through three unequal wellheads, each in its own pale frost bloom; a cable leaves to the lower left toward a small outpost module, tiny by comparison. Flat plates of ice lie scattered across the floor, and every one of them, and every part of the plant, throws a single hard-edged shadow straight away from the glowing duct, so the floor becomes a radiating star of shadow. Pasted into the black sky at the upper left is a hard-cut circular photograph of warm sunlit hills, tilted, with its own small sun and its own shadows falling the wrong way, lifted off the picture by a crisp drop shadow. No text, no insignia; nothing shown here exists.
An artistic imagining, rendered procedurally from spheres, cylinders and cones alone, of a fission power station working on the floor of a permanently shadowed lunar polar crater, where the cold is not the hazard but the heat sink the whole design is built around: the glow of its transfer duct is the only light this floor has ever had, and a photograph of daylight hangs pasted above a place that has never had any. Lunar cold traps are real, with floor temperatures measured near 26-30 K by LRO's Diviner radiometer, and fission surface power is a real research line, but no such station exists, is planned, or is funded.
