An artistic imagining, not real hardware, and fully speculative. A brilliant blue white disc, a cooling white dwarf, burns in the upper left of a square cyan field that grades from near white at the star to deep petrol at the lower right. Faint luminous threads stream off the star's lower limb down into the scene. Across the field stand rank after identical rank of machines in a converging perspective grid, from a few large ones cropped by the bottom edge to dozens of small ones silhouetted in the glare near the star. Each machine is a long collector plate tilted up toward the star, a squat engine block, a raked radiator panel trailing away on the far side, and two legs. Every machine is drawn as an enormous coarse halftone screen of the same light that lies behind it, so the star shows through between the dots, while the open field itself stays perfectly smooth. Orange red dots trace a conductor down through each machine and run along sagging cables between the ranks, gathering into a heavy bundle that leaves the frame at the right. One ragged pale diagonal tear crosses the picture, and everything below it is shifted sideways as if the print had slipped in the press.

2026-05-02 The Last Heat, Rank by Rank

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A pale technical plate drawn only in fine line work on warm bone paper, in graphite, stone grey and one green ink. An enormous amphitheatre is cut into a Martian crater as forty eight nested arcs of seating, packed close at the bottom of the bowl and stepping further apart as they climb. The lower arcs are drawn in green and crowded with thousands of tiny standing marks, each a seated suited figure; a wandering boundary partway up the bank marks where the heating coils stop, and every arc above it is grey stone with empty bench divisions and only a handful of small figures. Two stairs of unequal length cut radially through the bank. A low stage platform juts from the bottom of the bowl carrying eight faceless suited figures, a lit lip of footlights along its front edge, and a raked lighting boom whose housed lamps throw fine pale green rays back into the house. A lamp string sags on a long diagonal from a lattice mast high on the left slope to a stub post on the right. A slab terrace let into the crater wall on the right carries a rank of switch cabinets and transformers under a heavy green busbar, with green trunk cables running down to the seating and a feeder climbing to three lattice pylons on the crater rim. A ramp of steps climbs from the crater floor into the open left end of the bank, and a small shelter with lit green windows stands on the hatched floor at lower right. Above the rim the sky is ruled in horizontal lines that crowd together toward the horizon.

2026-05-01 The Warm Line

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A woodcut style print of a ship hull standing broadside in a building slip cut into an asteroid. The forward half of the hull, on the left, is still an open cage: a heavy curved stem and keel with nine transverse frames rising from it, the frames getting taller aft, crossed by two longitudinal stringers and a walkway with two figures on it. The aft half, on the right, is closed in flat blue plating ruled into strakes and butt seams, with a hatch, a hanging staging where three more figures stand, and three unequal engine bells clustered at the stern. Three lapped plates step down at the joint between the frames and the plating, and one welding arc flares white at the keel there, throwing spiked light up into the cage and down over the cradle blocks below. The hull rests on five wide unequal blocks and four raking shores inside a black shadow. Above, an overhead crane carries a fresh plate on its hook. At the left a small collector array on a mast feeds a power line carried on posts to switchgear and out along a trunk cable to the welding rig, an ore kiln and a plate mill. In the foreground a tip of ore, a spare nozzle bell, stacks of rolled plate and a mill with a glowing slab. The whole plate is printed in halftone dots on bone paper and every light in it is cut as white lines on three fixed angles.

2026-04-30 The Hull Closes

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A square picture in flat unshaded colour, almost entirely black-brown basalt, showing the inside of a lava tube on Mars used as a fish farm. The tube runs from the upper left to the lower right and four tall glass tanks stand in a row down its descending floor, each one larger than the last, the nearest cut off by the right edge of the frame. The water in every tank stands at exactly the same height, one unbroken horizontal across the picture. Below that line the water is deep green and holds ranks of large gold fish, all facing left, spaced on a regular lattice, with columns of small pale bubbles rising from a bar on the floor of each tank. Above the line, sealed under a steel lid, the air space of every tank is a bright blue daylight sky with flat white cumulus clouds in it, and a lamp bar burning pale gold hangs inside that sky on a cable that comes down through the lid. Every wedge in the picture leans at the same angle, including one dim shaft of pale daylight falling from a collapse pit in the roof at the upper left onto bare rock, far from the tanks. At the far left a cable comes down a bored shaft in the roof to a dark switchboard with gold bars and breakers; from it a gold trunk cable runs along the roof and drops one feeder into every tank lid, an orange heat circuit runs down under the tank line to orange heater strips at each tank base, and a pale pipe from a blower runs along the floor to the bubble bars. A faceless suited figure stands on a walkway on top of the nearest tank, seen from behind, lowering a dip net with fish in it through an open hatch. 2026-04-29 The Sky, Bolted In

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A perspective view from inside Saturn's ring plane, low over a luminous carpet of ice that streaks away toward the foot of the planet. Saturn fills the upper left of the frame, a pale banded globe cut by the top and left edges, its terminator falling across it. In the middle distance a long scooper craft skims the ice from right to left. Its wide conical intake, ribbed with nine radial vanes and braced by three struts, opens toward the viewer at the right, and a column of tumbling ice boulders converges into it from the lower right, with several chunks caught crossing the rim. Behind the intake a collar joins a cracker drum that glows orange from inside, and the glow spills onto the ice at the mouth and along the hull. Two unequal strapped capsule tanks hang below and behind the drum, fed by transfer lines from the drum. A dark photovoltaic wing on a mast angles up into the sunlight above the spine. A narrow orange exhaust runs away to the left across the planet, and the craft throws a soft shadow across the ice below it. Three large ice blocks are cropped by the bottom edge in the foreground. The whole image is built from only three colours: a warm ink black, a bone white and one signal orange.

2026-04-28 The Ring Is the Tank

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A square halftone poster on a mid value plum grey field. Three ranked rows of radiator banks recede across the picture: twenty units in all, each one a fan of six long thin plates splayed from a hub on a dark double chord boom, drawn as six successive angular positions of the same swinging plate at six different ink weights. Every plate burns hot magenta at the root nearest its inlet, steps down through a warmer middle band, and ends dark wine at the tip, with a bone bright sunlit top edge and a shaded under edge. Ordered fans of hard edged wedges leave the broad faces and step up and to the right, each front longer, wider and weaker than the one before it. Along the bottom a hot magenta trunk main runs the width of the frame carrying rounded slugs of coolant that step downstream in fading series, with vertical risers climbing from it into every near hub and two longer risers carrying the loop up to the middle and far booms. At the lower left a compact plant of two dark pressure hulls, a tall tower and a small can sits on the main, braced by bone struts, with a bright magenta core burning low and enclosed inside the cluster. Jupiter hangs cropped by the top right corner, its cloud belts and Great Red Spot each drawn as five sheared positions of the same band. The whole field is woven with a faint lattice of interlocking triangles and ruled by a hairline module grid. Every value in the image is a halftone dot; there is no flat tint, no gradient and no text.

2026-04-27 Six Positions of One Watt

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A pale technical plate drawn in fine graphite line work with one warm orange ink on ivory paper, most of the sheet left empty. Ten dish antennas of different sizes stand scattered across a frost plain below a high horizon, each bowl carried on a yoke and column with a small feed box on a tripod above it. One orange cable crosses the whole plate as a long wave: it rises into a tall crest on the left, dives out of sight behind a low building at the centre, rises again into a smaller crest on the right, and runs off the right edge, with small cleats ticking along it. Short orange feeders run from every antenna down to that one cable. At the left end the cable begins at a compact reactor with a shadow shield and two hatched radiator wings. The building at the centre is drawn with its front wall opened, showing seven equipment cabinets with lit orange slots standing on a glowing floor, and a hot orange header leaves the wall, drops past a pump box and feeds a bank of seven canted radiator panels in the lower right, hatched hot at their roots and cool at their tips. A cropped limb of Neptune with two faint bands stands low in the sky at the upper right.

2026-04-26 The Cable Draws What It Hears

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A dark, banded picture in magenta, violet and pale ice blue, built as horizontal layers with the ground cut away so the buried part is visible. One saturated magenta stripe runs from the top of the frame straight down the left side, turns along the bottom, and forms the power feed. On the horizon sits a long, low industrial block with five pale capped cylinders standing across its face and a rank of narrow finned stacks rising above it, flushed dull rose at their roots. A pale cyan pipe runs the full width of the picture just below the horizon and drops narrow risers into seven buried spherical vessels of very different sizes, each glowing cold and each showing a different bright fill line across it, the leftmost and rightmost cut off by the frame. The ground itself is two toned: pale lit ice on the left, near black on the right, meeting on a hard vertical edge, with three dull rose pipes lying on the dark side. A second magenta line leaves the block to the right on short pylons and ends at a small dark structure with a row of warm orange windows. A dim ringed planet is cropped by the top right corner. 2026-04-25 The Bank of Cold

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. Continuous-tone illustration on a pale rose ice field: a cross section straight down through an ice shell, with a narrow band of black star sky along the top, kilometres of layered and bubbled ice below it, and cold blue water across the bottom. A single glowing red cable, one constant thickness from end to end, runs the whole depth of the picture and makes every piece of equipment on the way. At the surface, left of centre, a low grey shed and an open frame hold a drum with the cable wound in close turns across it; a small suited figure stands on the ice nearby, only a few pixels tall, giving the scale. The cable leaves the top of the drum, drops into a bore, and works down the shell in a loose zigzag: it takes a round turn and a half hitch around each of four short posts frozen into the ice, it hangs in three loose drifting hanks of spare cable, it winds into two tight bright helices that glow orange inside melted pockets, and at one point it doubles back on itself and binds the pair with a close spiral of its own turns to make a joint. It passes through a dark collar at the base of the shell, sags slack across the water, coils once more, and ends as a flattened glowing element on the roof of a dark, low work vehicle held under the ice ceiling, cutting a bright melted dimple up into the ice above it. 2026-04-24 One Wire All the Way Down

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A photogram style print on laid pale-wheat stock, drawn only in line: every straight mark is a ray running out from one point, and every curve is an arc struck about that same point or about Saturn, whose centre lies far below the bottom of the frame. Saturn's rings fill the whole field as hundreds of concentric arcs in pale gold, deep amber and graphite, banded light and dark, and crossing the picture is a clear empty lane held between two heavy black walls: the gap. Standing in that lane, a little left of centre, is the repeater. A deep dish of ruled arcs and radial ribs opens back along the line the beam arrives on; at the machine's centre is a small blank core burnt to the pale-wheat stock tone where the beam is caught and turned; a lopsided dark keel of dense ribs hangs under it on the Saturn side; a comb of emitter tines fans out on the other; a trussed mast leans up out of the ring plane and ends in a small open platform; and a short spiral of wire is opened out behind the dish. The beam itself enters from beyond the left edge as a broad amber band with a white over exposed line burning down its middle, passes through the machine, and leaves to the right at a visibly different angle, ruled across with curved wavefronts, into a small second station drawn at the right edge of the frame. Every particle in the rings prints its own short shadow as a tick pointing away from the machine. On the Saturn side a wedge of ring material has reversed tone into a dark hatched lune edged by bare white contour lines; on the opposite side the print has burnt clean out to pale-wheat printed light, so the mast stands against nothing. 2026-04-23 Where the Beam Bends

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A cutaway section drawn entirely in line work, in three inks only: a warm mid grey ground, dark graphite lines, and one orange. The ice surface crosses the frame about two fifths of the way down, hatched with short ticks and dipping into two shallow craters. Above it stands a small settlement: a low barrel vault module on the left, a mast with one crossarm and two guy lines, a tiny wheeled vehicle for scale, a tall settlement hall drawn open in section with three floors, two stairs and a heap of regolith shielding ticked in over its flat roof, and on the right three radiator fins of unequal height and lean, ruled with fine cross ribs, standing on a common header. A cropped disc of Jupiter, ruled with a few horizontal bands, fills the upper right corner, and the rest of the sky is empty except for scattered star dots. Below the surface the crust is drawn as a family of contour lines that lie flat far away and arch into a tall dome over the lower left, crowding where the gradient is steepest and cut by three thin faults; a cross hatched band of rock closes the bottom of the frame. At the foot of that dome, inside an irregular excavated chamber, lies the source: a long horizontal containment drum with a hemispherical cap, its interior ruled in dense orange lines and crossed by one orange midplane line, with six control rods of unequal length hung from a drive beam carried on a single pier, and three unequal piers under its floor slab. An orange outlet duct leaves the cap, turns, and climbs a bored shaft that leans to the right as it rises, its left wall carrying a ladder, its bore carrying three orange trunk lines of unequal weight. At the surface those lines meet a short manifold bar and split into a shallow utilidor that runs left to the module, up into the two lit decks of the hall, and right to the hot inlet edge of each radiator fin. 2026-04-22 The Only Fire on Callisto

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A dark violet field built entirely from flat overlapping planes, with no gradients, no outlines and no curves anywhere. In the upper left corner a small white nine sided plate stands for the sun, ringed by a stepped, off centre flare of paler violet plates, and a shallow rake of parallel pale bands crosses the whole picture from it. Strung along one dominant diagonal that runs from that corner down to the right are eighteen translucent film sheets, every one the same quadrilateral at the same tilt and only rescaled, small and crowded near the sun and very large in the foreground, where two of them run off the frame edges entirely. Each sheet carries a bright pale rim along its sunward edge, a hard black stiffening spar along its far edge, and a small dark bus box on the end of that spar. Where sheets cross, the violet tint accumulates and the overlap is the only depth cue in the frame. From sixteen of those bus boxes, tapered pale beams converge on a single point right of centre and low, piling into a near white cone at a small opaque collector hub with two heat rejection fins and a bright absorber plate turned square to the incoming light. From that hub one hard bright line runs down and across to the lower left, where a low works stands: a long deck, two towers, a stepped roof, a receiving absorber plate on a mast, and eight small amber windows, the only warm colour in the picture. In the upper right hangs Saturn, its globe a faceted polygon crossed by flat bands and a dark ring shadow, its rings drawn as opened elliptical annuli of pale violet passing behind the globe on one side and in front of it on the other.
