Image of the Day

Every daily image published so far, newest first. Each is an artistic imagining of power in space, not a photograph of existing hardware.

An artistic imagining, not real hardware, and fully speculative. A colossal ring seen from outside and a little above its plane, drawn entirely in flat unmodulated planes on a nine step gold scale with two slate counter tones. The ring enters at the left edge, sweeps across the top of the frame as a broad pale gold band, turns at its right limb inside the frame, and comes back across the bottom as a dark banded surface, so the two arcs read as one continuous ring. The upper band is the ring's inhabited inner floor, resolved into a matrix of small rectangular cells: checkerboards of dark collector fields, blocks of bright city lattice, pale highlands, and a few slate blue seas, with several hard edged black rectangles of night printed across it. A bright hairline runs along the ring's edge wall the whole way round. A cool white disc, the star, stands off centre in the enclosed space, the only cool colour in the picture, and the sky around it is stepped into flat square planes that brighten toward it. Between the star and the ring float dozens of flat rectangular plates in graded marching rows: those beyond the star are pale and lit, those nearer the viewer are near black with a thin bright rim of spilled starlight. The dark lower arc carries unequal strips, two of them warm, where the waste heat leaves. No text or insignia appears anywhere. 2026-04-08 The Floor Goes All the Way Round An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A view straight down the axis of a rotating habitat drum whose outer wall holds a body of water. Because rotation makes down point outward, the water lies against the wall and the swimming lane closes into a ring, so the whole picture is a turquoise cylinder of lit water seen from inside. Painted lane lines ring the pale pool floor and a net of caustics plays over them. Strings of lane rope floats mark the lane boundaries as dotted circles. Roughly a hundred and fifty swimmers, drawn as flat hard edged silhouettes with no faces or interior detail, repeat around the drum in concentric lap lanes, each trailing a faint wake and casting a shadow outward onto the floor. A lamp gantry hung just off the spin axis runs away into the haze as a line of bright capsule luminaires, converging on a distant vanishing point set off centre. On the floor sit a heat exchanger and pump plant with a cyan lit switchgear face, a cable run sweeping around the drum, and amber heating panels sunk flush in the floor with warm water lifting off them. A lattice diving tower rises inward from the surface toward the axis with figures standing on its platforms, and several divers fall outward through the air toward the water. 2026-04-07 The Lane With No Ends
