An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A flat colour illustration in greens of power distribution on the surface of Venus. A large tracked crawler sits low on a hazy plain, its body stepping up from the left frame edge, which cuts it off, to a tall junction tower on its back. A very wide striped cable leaves the lid of that tower and climbs to the upper right, passing out through a winch throat under a long overhead platform that is cropped by the top and right edges of the frame; two solar wings hang off that platform and a bright bus line runs along its underside into the throat. The cable is banded lengthwise in dark green, deep teal and a sunlit yellow edge, and carries a broken line of bright yellow green blocks that shorten and close up as they approach the machine. The ground is drawn as a polar survey chart: flat cells of olive, moss and near black fan out from the tower along unequal rays, cut by thin dark arcs, growing murkier toward the horizon. Three spur cables run out of the tower base across the plain to three small remote machines of different sizes, each with a lit green panel. A single lamp on the crawler's shoulder throws one flat yellow wedge of light to the right, a boom arm reaches down from the tower into the rock with a hot orange face at its tip, and an orange fissure runs off the bottom right corner. A dark mesa with a second fissure stands on the right horizon under a sky banded into flat green strata, with a pale yellow patch of diffuse sun cut by the upper left corner.

2026-05-30 The Line Down Into the Furnace

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A square picture in deep oxblood and hot crimson, almost black at the top right and glowing at the bottom left. Filling the lower left half of the frame is an enormous flat panel seen at a steep angle, tilted away from the viewer and running off the left and bottom edges: it is ruled into a grid of one hundred and sixty identical square emitter apertures, sixteen across and ten deep, each one a rounded pad modelled with its own soft highlight and its own shadow, and each one lit from within so the field glows in a slow wave from pale apricot near the lower left to dull brick red at the far corners. The panel carries a raised rail around its edge and three bright orange conductor lines of unequal width that climb its face along the grid, the widest of them rising from a dark cowling at the bottom left corner, whose glowing slot is the only other light source in the picture, and ending at a small blinding node partway up the panel. From that node one straight shaft of light leaves at about forty five degrees. It has hard edges, two bright rails, a pale pink core and faint lengthwise striations inside it, and it stays a shaft rather than spreading into a glow: it crosses the entire grid diagonally, passes out beyond the panel's upper right corner and travels on across empty space to the upper right of the frame. There it lands, off to one side of centre, on a large square membrane sail tilted in three quarter view, whose four edges bow very slightly outward and whose four corners carry dark cleats. The membrane is bright pinkish gold where the beam strikes it and falls away to deep red at its far corners, with a lit boom along its near edge. In front of the sail, silhouetted against the beam, hangs a small dark payload canister on a slim cross boom, held by six taut shroud lines that fan out to the corners and edges of the sail. Along the bottom right of the frame is a dark curved hull banded with concentric ribs, with a fan of radiator plates spreading from its right side, each plate lit along its leading edge and tipped with a thin cold violet rim. The open upper left is a broad magenta wash crossed by faint concentric arcs spreading out from the beam node, with a scatter of small warm stars. No text, no lettering, no insignia. 2026-05-29 Ten Thousand Emitters, One Shaft

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A plain orthographic section drawing, in dark brown line work on a flat mid ochre ground, of a nuclear plant built inside a hollowed out asteroid. Across the top of the frame runs a narrow band of flat black vacuum, and below it the convex limb of a small rocky body, with a squat crew lander on splayed legs, two small head houses over shafts, a survey monument and a row of unequal flat radiator panels standing on the surface. Under the surface is a thick band of hatched rock in section, drawn with bedding lines and angular breccia clasts and pierced by two lined shafts: a personnel shaft on the left with a caged ladder and small lamps, and a coolant riser on the right carrying a duct up to the radiator panels. The rock opens into a single excavated hall filling the middle of the frame, its scalloped ceiling carrying rock bolts, wire mesh panels, a cable tray on drop hangers, four working lamps and a crane rail. Left of centre stands the reactor: a stepped mass of shield blocks with coarse staggered coursing, and on it a squat cylindrical vessel with a domed head, two bolted ring flanges and a crowd of twelve control rod drive stand pipes of unequal height rising off the dome under a gathered cable loom. At deck level a shield door stands open on its hinges behind a chain barrier, and inside it a six by six grid of glowing fuel channel ends runs from deep orange to near white, five of the channels plugged and dark. Ruled orange rays fan out of the opening across the deck, and a single suited faceless worker stands beside it in silhouette. Two lagged pipes leave the vessel, one with a short length of lagging removed showing bare hot orange pipe, and run right into two horizontal heat exchanger drums of unequal size on saddle stands, the upper one carrying a walkway and handrail. Beyond them a steam line drops into a small turbine and alternator set on a hatched plinth on the lower floor, and from its terminal box three heavy bus bars run right into an arched tunnel bored through the rock wall, where a hatched roadway, ring beams and four crown lamps recede to a small lit doorway in the distance. A second heavy bus runs the other way along the undercroft beneath the steel deck, on cleats between stub columns, to a distribution board at the left wall, and a feeder climbs from that board to the ceiling tray that lights the hall. The hall is full of ordinary working evidence: handrails with kick plates, caged ladders, a parked charge machine stowed on the crane rail, spares racking, a bank of gas bottles, drip pans, a pallet of shield blocks, a wheeled trolley, a bucket, a hose hung in a shallow drape, lifted floor plates leaning against the shield, a bolted patch plate and drainage stains. A cut drain channel and core drill holes run across the rock invert below. Everything except the core, the small inspection port and the one unlagged pipe is drawn in browns.

2026-05-28 A Star With Handrails

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A line drawing on warm bone coloured ground, made entirely of ruled strokes with no filled shapes anywhere. Ten tilted discs hang across the upper two thirds of the square, each one a reflective sail: a heavy dark rim, a face ruled with close amber battens, a blank unruled crescent where the sun glares off it, a braced boom across the face and a short mast ending in a small ring. They vary from one very large disc at the left to small ones near the edges, and five paler grey sails recede toward the top right corner. Short amber shafts of sunlight run in from the upper right and stop dead on the sail faces. From every sail a ribbon of amber rulings runs inward and down, and all ten ribbons converge on one point low in the frame, tightening as they go and stopping at the flared mouth of a collector, so the inside of that funnel and its rounded throat are left as bare unprinted ground and are the brightest thing in the picture. The collector stands on short braced legs on a lumpy asteroid built from overlapping circles, its shaded side hatched, its sunward side left clean, with crater arcs scattered over it. A heavy vermilion line runs from the throat down the tower to the surface, turns along the rock as a busbar, and drops into the works at the lower right: a large drum hatched in graded rows with two stave lines, a small tap on its shoulder throwing short vermilion flame strokes, and a small product tank. A ruled conveyor runs from a hatched pit at the lower left into the drum. Fine dark tether lines run from the sails down to three anchor pads on the rock.

2026-05-27 Ten Sails, One Throat

An artistic imagining, not real hardware; nothing shown exists, is planned or is funded. A dense engraved plate on a stained rose-bone sheet, drawn entirely in ruled line inside a copperplate plate mark. A dead flat plain runs back to a hard horizon a little below centre, and above it the sky is one perfectly even ruling with no variation anywhere in it. Left of centre and close to the viewer, a heavy iron lantern hangs from a long cantilever bracket braced by two thin stays: a conical hood over a glazed drum divided by four unevenly spaced uprights and one mid rail, the glass left almost as bare paper so it reads as the brightest thing in the picture, a flared skirt and a knob beneath. Its light lays a magenta pool over the plain and throws four long bar shadows raking toward the bottom of the frame. Behind it and further left a half-buried cylindrical drum lies on its side under three iron hoops, with a short stub on its shoulder whose throat is lit. Three lagged pipes arch up from the drum, over the lamp, and into the flank of a squat vertical engine at the centre, which carries a tight coil wound round its foot, a collar band, a heavy flywheel and crank rod on its right flank alone, a cluster of small vessels crowding its base, and a leaning stack. From the engine a header pipe runs away to the right above a receding comb of thin radiator fins that shrinks steadily toward the horizon. A thick conduit crosses the near foreground and leaves through the bottom left corner. Every tone in the plate is made of that one ruling following each form, with magenta lines lying in the gaps between the black ones wherever the lamp's light falls. No text and no insignia appear.

2026-05-26 The Last Gradient

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A flat plane illustration in deep violet of a bathhouse cut into the regolith of Ceres. Above the horizon, under a black sky and scattered stars, a refining plant is cropped by the top and left edges of the frame, two tall furnace slots burning magenta in its flank. A single heavily lagged trunk main leaves the plant, crosses the surface on raking legs, and plunges down a lined shaft into a chamber below, where it enters a stack of unequal exchanger bodies through a bright nozzle. One large glowing mouth and three small ports light the block. A spout hangs off it and pours a sheet of hot water down into a wide sunken pool, throwing up a torn splash and a plume of steam that drifts left across the room. About a dozen faceless bathers stand shoulder deep in the pale water, their reflections broken into hard cut planes below them, while others sit on the coping with their legs in the water and a few stand on the deck. One large bather, seen from behind, is cropped by the bottom right corner of the frame. Away to the upper right, two cold radiator panels hang unlit and unused. Every solid is struck two or three times on offset printing plates, so a magenta fringe stands on one flank of each object and a dark one on the other, and the hotter the object the further out of register it sits.

2026-05-25 What the Plant Cannot Throw Away

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A tank farm scattered across the sunlit surface of a small asteroid, printed as one coarse four colour magazine halftone with the dots plainly visible. The sky behind the curved horizon is a flat mid grey with no stars at all, and a single small white sun sits high at the left. Twenty three storage vessels stand across the rock in no rows at all, some standing cylinders and some bullet tanks lying on their sides, all of them close to the same size and all of them transparent, so the propellant inside shows as a solid gold body with one flat surface: a few are nearly full, several are part full at every level in between, and two or three are almost empty and read as pale vapour. Each vessel is outlined in a heavy black keyline, stands clear of the ground on short legs over its own hard shadow, and carries a ladder to a small access deck on one flank and a vent stub on the other. A gold pipe weaves through the feet of the field and rises into each tank by a short riser. Three tanks trail a small pale plume at the crown where they are being filled. On the skyline at the upper left, four tilted solar panels of unequal size stand on the limb, wired across to a squat processing block whose foot glows gold and whose conveyor runs down into the regolith. At the lower left a tanker lander stands on three splayed legs, cropped by the frame edge, its own tank transparent and about a third full, with a loading arm plugged into its fill port and a soft gold cloud of boil off at the coupling. Two small tanker vehicles sit on the ground for scale.

2026-05-22 Stock on Hand

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A square picture in deep petrol green, split across the middle by one hard horizontal cut, as though two photographs had been scissored apart and butted together. Above the cut, filling the top of the frame, is the underside of a five layer sunshade seen at a grazing angle from below: five long curved sheets fanning open to the right, each with a lit far edge, stepping in colour from a blown incandescent gold at the top through olive and sage to a green that is almost black at the fifth, with the sky beyond the first sheet milky with scattered light and holding no stars at all. A leaning mast rises through the stack, collared where it passes three of the sheets, and a thin amber power line runs down from a small sunlit power block at the top right corner. Both the mast and the power line visibly jog sideways where they cross the cut, and the power line changes colour there from amber to emerald. Below the cut everything is deep green black and full of sharp small stars. A horizontal service spine hangs there with a stout cylindrical instrument slung under its left end, aimed down and to the left into the darkest part of the frame: the tube is lit along its lower flank by a narrow green highlight, wrapped by one collar, clamped with a single cryogen line, shrouded on its upper side by a matte black baffle that overshoots the open end, and its mouth is a dark bore with one bright arc on the lower lip. A small block near the spine glows with a slot of intense pale green, the coldest looking thing in the picture, with a single pipe running from it to the instrument. From the right end of the spine a boom runs out and down to the corner of the frame carrying a supply manifold and six hanging plates of very unequal width and length, leaning at different angles and overlapping each other in depth. Each plate is amber where it meets the manifold, fades through pale yellow green, and goes to green black at its lower tip, and a soft green haze drifts off the near face of each one. One tiny warm lit doorway, a few metres across against plates hundreds of times its size, is cut into the flank of the plate field. No text, no lettering, no insignia. Nothing shown here exists.

2026-05-21 Colder Than the Dark

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A woodcut style print in three inks on mid stone grey paper: bone white, vermillion and ink black, deliberately printed slightly out of register so every shape carries a coloured fringe and a sliver of bare paper along one edge. The view looks obliquely down across the frozen surface of a small dark body, with a wedge of black sky in the upper left corner speckled with paper white stars and one slightly larger bone coloured grain among them. Broad pale bands sweep across the whole square from upper right to lower left, wavering like wood grain; one of them runs on past the edge of the body and out into the black sky. About fifty small listening dishes are scattered over the ice, largest in the foreground and shrinking into fine grain at the top of the picture. Each is a shallow faceted bowl with a bone white face, canted at its own angle, carried on two unequal legs over a squat casing with a small vermillion lit panel cut into it, with a single feed arm reaching in from one side. A branching vermillion cable, outlined in black and thickest at its root, runs from a low black power block on the left, whose wide core panel burns vermillion behind a bone surround and whose canted radiator plates stand above it with lit lips, out through the whole field, splitting again and again until a line reaches every dish. Small pale lozenges ride the heaviest runs. The trunk gathers into a long low black bank on the right, the largest mass in the picture, its front broken by a staggered row of unequal vermillion faces cut through the casing and crossed by a heavy black rail. A rake of broad canted plates leans back from it, each outer lip lit vermillion. The ground around the bank is a spill of bone white with vermillion shards raking out across it, brilliant where they cross the pale ground and dropping to dark maroon the moment they run off it. 2026-05-20 The Whole Budget, Spent Thinking

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A dark cyan scene underground: a rank of heavy composite flywheel drums stands in a rock tunnel on Mars, receding to the right toward a pale glow far down the hall. Each drum is turned away from the viewer, so it reads as a thick ellipse rather than a full circle, and each sits in a low containment cradle with a drive can and a horizontal shaft entering from the left and disappearing behind the wheel. Nothing is drawn at the axis. A bright arc of light wraps part of every rim, long on some wheels and short on others, and the faces carry soft tangential smears where the mass is turning. A lit power line runs along the floor from the lower left, and a short feeder drops from each cradle down onto it. The rock roof and floor are modelled in tone only, warm basalt washed cyan by the machines, with no drawn outline anywhere.

2026-05-19 Held in Rotation

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A wide view across the floor of an ancient impact basin on the Moon's far side, rendered in warm bone greys with a cool ash sky. Ranks of dark rectangular receiving panels stand on single posts and recede in perspective toward a low eroded rim, each throwing a long shadow across the pale regolith. One much larger panel stands left of centre as the field's primary aperture, its face divided into unequal cells, planted on a thick canted spine with two braces. A column of light descends out of the dark sky at the right and lands as a bright waist on the field, and the panels nearest that light carry blazing rims. A low boxy converter stands inside the lit patch with a row of glowing louvres at ground level, and a single low cable runs from it to a small junction box at the lower left. A slender relay mast with an asymmetric boom stands far off at the left. The whole picture carries one continuous rubbed wood grain and a blotted mineral crust laid flat across regolith, machinery and sky alike.

2026-05-17 A Light Made Elsewhere

An artistic imagining, not real hardware. A dark line drawing on a deep blue black ground, built entirely from pen strokes: straight ruled lines on six fixed angles for everything engineered, and curved tapered brush strokes for everything that moves. A shallow horizon arc crosses the upper third, the limb of a small icy world. Below it, three graded terraces are cut into the ice, and nine cylindrical generator drums of unequal size lie in open cradles across them at three depths. Each drum is a ribbed shell with a few fat axial fins and a curved cap at each end, dark on top and glowing along its underbelly in orange running up to a near white core, with small orange slots and comma shaped flares of light escaping between the fins. Each drum lays its own separate shallow pool of light on the bench beneath it, and long raking streaks run out of the two largest. One cradle stands empty, a bare A frame and a footing where a unit has been lifted out. A single suited faceless worker stands between the two nearest drums, drawn only as a silhouette with the fires behind. A heavy cable bus swags in from the left, gathers every drum on a drooping jumper, and leaves to the right as one thick trunk that crosses the near ice on three trestles and drops into a landing box at the near corner of a long low half buried station at the lower right. The station has a hatched hull, a roof rail, four unequal windows lit warm orange, a small work lamp at its corner, a short railed ramp with three stanchions down to the ice, its own light lying on the forecourt in front of it, and a mast mounted radiator panel angled up over the roof with red heat arcs at its root and a dark tip. A second cable spur runs off to the left across the foreground. Rising off the warmed ice, one enormous vapour bank sweeps from the feet of the cluster up and out through the top right corner, red lit at its base and cool grey above, drawn as thousands of overlapping hatch strokes. High at the upper left the sun is a tiny knot of crossing strokes giving no light, among scattered tiny open arcs of stars. A few faceted blocks of quarried ice sit out on the plain. There is no filled area, no gradient and no blur anywhere in the image.
